The Kingdom of God Belongs to Such as These

This morning Juan Pablo woke up in a foul mood. He was out of control, wild and rambunctious, and was not doing a good job listening. After what felt like the 517th time that he did something that caused his little sister to get hurt, I finally managed, after a bit of a struggle to get him to sit on my lap and calm down enough to look at me. I told him that if his behavior did not change, we wouldn't be going to playgroup this morning, because he was being too wild and not being nice to his little sister, and that made me think that he was going to have a hard time being calm and nice to his friends at playgroup.

As soon as I let him down from my lap, he got down on his knees on the living room floor, folded his hands in prayer and said, "Jesus, help me to be good so that we can go to playgroup." From that moment on, he was a completely different kid. He was listened and followed directions, making getting out the door to playgroup the smoothest transition all week. At playgroup he was sweet and calm, remembered to us his words, and was polite to his friends and their mothers. When it was time to leave playgroup, he did no protest at all, but got his coat and boots on, then held Ana Luisa's hand to help her as we walked out to the car.

Oh how beautiful is the simple faith of a child!
