Today was our first day of school. Ana Luisa kicked it off by running outside to play in her underwear in the rain. She said she was pretending to be an evil magician. Convincing, right?
And it was a nice reminder of why we've decided that home education is the best option for our family right now. If our kids want to run outside and play in the rain on a school morning, I want them to be able to do that. We can just start school later if we want to. Eventually everyone came inside and put some clothes on. Juan Pablo is very excited to start Kindergarten, and I don't think words even exist to describe how Ana Luisa feels about preschool. That face almost does it though.
I hadn't really planned to do anything too formal for Juan Pablo's Kindergarten year, just because I wasn't sure how easy it would be to get him on board. But then I found a packaged curriculum with a heavy focus on animals and nature...just the kind of thing that my little man could maybe get excited about. It starts out with a 10-day unit on Creation, then continues with 26 more units, each focused on a letter of the alphabet. The first unit is basic enough that Ana Luisa can follow along with most of it. And the parts she's not really ready for weren't really an issue because she's just so happy to be in school she doesn't care if she knows what is going on. She would just stare at me with a huge smile and say things like, "Yeah!" or "I don't know!" or just repeat whatever Juan Pablo had just said.
After cleaning that up, we went out for a celebratory first day of school lunch. And when the principal came home from his other job later that afternoon, the eager little students couldn't wait to show him what they had learned. So far so good...

And the littlest Pennings? While the rest of us were busy with schoolwork she managed to get a hold of an orange crayon. I got the crayon away from her soon enough, but didn't realize she had already gotten enough orange crayon bits stashed in her teeth to generate waxy orange drool that ended up everywhere.

What is your package called? I'm considering skipping preschool4 (or supplementing) for Evan this year and that sounds up his alley too! :)
